We distinguish between the surgical treatment of the upper and the lower eyelids. On the upper lids, hooded eyelids form with age or by predisposition: a considerable excess of skin develops which can also restrict the field of vision. In addition, small fat pads can protrude from the eye socket and make the findings worse. In technical terms the upper lid correction is called upper lid blepharoplasty or upper eyelid lift.

What is an upper eyelid lift?
The upper eyelid lift is one of the most frequent lifting operations on the face. With markedly slackened upper lids, some patients even try to fix them upwards with adhesive strips – it should not get that far. The advantage of this small procedure is its marked effect with a barely visible scar, provided the incision is correctly placed. It is also very well suited to raising the brow slightly at the same time.
How does the lower eyelid lift work?
With the lower lid correction, rather little skin is removed. Instead the underlying soft tissue is tightened and fat protruding from the eye socket is removed. The so-called tear troughs thereby become considerably smaller and the expression looks fresher. The incision lies below the lash line.
What can I expect from an eyelid lift?
With the upper eyelid lift a spindle of skin is removed under local anaesthesia. In the same procedure, fatty tissue bulging out of the eye socket can be removed as well – that ensures an aesthetic and long-lasting result. With the lower eyelid lift the structures lying beneath the skin are gently tightened using a skin-muscle flap. Upper and lower eyelid lifts can also be combined with each other, and both go well with a facelift or a forehead lift.
