One of the best-known treatment methods for expression lines is treatment with botulinum toxin. It temporarily blocks the transmission of impulses from the nerve to the muscle and thereby allows individual muscle groups to be relaxed in a targeted way. Our aim is always to preserve a natural appearance and to avoid a mask-like look.
Much has developed over the past decades, including the combination with other preparations such as an additional hyaluronic acid injection – with deep lines in particular this is recommended. Today's micro-cannulas are very fine, which allows the preparation to be dosed precisely and placed exactly. That requires experience: at our practice clinic in Oldenburg we carry out such procedures regularly.
What is botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a nerve toxin secreted by bacteria. It intervenes in the transmission of signals from the nerves to the muscle cells and temporarily prevents it. That makes it interesting for medicine: it is used successfully for increased muscle tone in the context of spasms – and in aesthetics to weaken the muscles responsible for unflattering lines.
What can I expect from a treatment?
In specialist hands the treatment involves little pain and little risk. I have years of experience with injections and have continually developed my skills in this field alongside my clinical work. Our aim is always to bring out your natural beauty – while preserving your facial expression.
Lines on the face and neck can be smoothed excellently with botulinum toxin. Special areas of application at our practice clinic are lines on the forehead, the frown line and fine lines on the nose, around the eyes and around the mouth. If the treatment is not sufficient to smooth a line, hyaluronic acid is additionally used – a so-called dermal filler. The effect lasts about six months, although after 2 to 3 months the previously relaxed muscle groups can begin to be activated again.
Treating the frown line
The frown line shows itself as one or more vertical furrows between the eyebrows and makes us look strained and angry. In technical terms this area is called the glabella. With botulinum toxin we relax the muscles there in a targeted way and reduce the formation of the line; afterwards it tends to smooth out slowly.
How do you get rid of lines on the nose?
Lines on the nose are called bunny lines. They are most clearly visible when the eyes are closed firmly while laughing. They can be treated effectively with a targeted, superficial injection.
What helps against crow's feet?
Crow's feet show themselves most strongly when the eyes are closed firmly. Small muscular extensions of the orbicularis oculi muscle towards the outer cheek are responsible; they can be inhibited so that the fine lines become less pronounced. Because of the proximity to the eye, this treatment belongs in experienced hands: botulinum toxin should not be used directly below the eye, because otherwise the ring muscle slackens and unwanted tear troughs form. Crow's feet can alternatively be treated with needling – do ask us at the consultation.
What can be done about a dimpled chin?
A dimpled chin describes an irregular chin contour. Two small chin muscles located very centrally are responsible. We regularly carry out injections in this area in order to create a more harmonious chin contour.
What can be done about bruxism?
Bruxism means repeatedly clenching and grinding the teeth through increased activity or an imbalance of the chewing muscles. Those affected often have a strongly developed chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw; many also describe neck pain, migraine symptoms and pain in the jaw joint. Your dentist can help with a bite splint, usually worn at night. With botulinum toxin we reduce the strength of the masseter muscle and thereby achieve a reduction in pain – without impairing chewing. As a side effect the cheek area can look somewhat slimmer, which is why this procedure is occasionally also requested for facial rejuvenation.
Can forehead lines disappear again?
Forehead lines, often called thinker's lines, run horizontally across the forehead. Botulinum toxin reduces them by relaxing the frontalis muscle in a targeted way. In women we occasionally raise the brows at the same time in order to avoid them dropping. If the eyelids have already slackened considerably or there is brow ptosis, we will gladly advise you on the surgical options – an eyelid lift, a brow lift or a forehead lift.
Brow lift with botulinum
If the brows drop, they can be raised with botulinum toxin. Our patients find this very pleasant and ask for it again and again. With age it is entirely normal for the brows to move down slightly, making the upper eyelids look heavy over the eyes.
How does a lip flip work?
If small lines around the mouth are to be treated or the red of the lip is to be accentuated against the surrounding skin, we use botulinum toxin. It is injected carefully into the superficial parts of the corresponding muscle and relaxes the skin in this area. The advantage: the lips look minimally fuller, the red of the lip is better defined and the fine lines around the mouth become less pronounced. Anyone who likes drinking a milkshake through a straw will afterwards find that a little harder; otherwise no relevant restrictions are to be expected. More volume is provided by lip modelling with hyaluronic acid.
What is Nefertiti Botox?
Nefertiti Botox works through a targeted relaxation of the outer lip depressor muscle together with a targeted injection of the neck muscle, giving a clearly improved jawline. A modern technique with a great effect.
Baby Botox?
Baby Botox is really pure marketing to bring ever younger patient groups into the practice. It means a lower dose and the injection of individual areas of facial expression to emphasise naturalness and to prevent wrinkles from forming.
Which wrinkle treatment is the right one?
First the cause has to be clarified. Lines arise partly through overuse of the muscles and partly through sagging tissue in the course of ageing. Lines caused by muscles, such as forehead lines, we treat with botulinum toxin, colloquially Botox. Deep lines are additionally injected with hyaluronic acid. Lines caused by gravity, such as the marionette line, are usually treated with hyaluronic acid – or, where there is marked sagging, with a facelift.
Can lines recede?
Lines are, in a sense, relief zones of the skin where it gives way during movement. Since we have moved a great deal over the course of our lives and the skin ages, the formation of lines is entirely normal. Botulinum toxin relaxes the muscles and temporarily reduces certain expressions so that the skin in the line zone can slowly recover. If this natural process is not enough, hyaluronic acid helps.
