When the soft tissue of the neck slackens, a steeply falling neck often develops, possibly with the formation of crinkle lines. How do we treat the double chin and the neck at our practice clinic?
A combination of liposuction and internal tightening is often necessary – either with argon plasma technology or by gathering the SMAS, the superficial musculo-aponeurotic system. The access points lie below the ears and beneath the chin. The scars are very inconspicuous and the effect lasts a long time. That said: an operated region also remains subject to the ageing process.
Minimally invasive double chin treatment
The fat of the neck is reduced by liposuction through three small access points. The access points are 5 mm in size and lie beneath the chin and below each ear. Afterwards argon plasma technology tightens the skin and the underlying soft tissue through a heat effect.
A crêpey neck – what can be done?
A double chin and a crêpey neck often occur at the same time. While the double chin can be tightened well with argon plasma after liposuction, the effect on crinkle lines is present but does not make them disappear completely. Depending on the extent, crinkle lines can be corrected surgically with a combined neck and face lift. Where they are very pronounced, only a thread lift or direct removal will help, which means an additional scar on the front of the neck.

How does the neck lift work at our practice clinic?
As early as the preparatory consultation with advice, detailed information about risks and an examination, we plan the operation. Our aim is to respond to your wishes as well as possible before the procedure.
On the day of the operation, which we carry out in our own rooms in Oldenburg, you are scheduled in such a way that long waiting times are avoided. I will then go through what we discussed with you once more and repeat the markings. Our nursing and anaesthesia team will look after you. Whether the operation is performed on an outpatient or inpatient basis is something we have agreed together beforehand. If monitoring is necessary, a nurse looks after you throughout the night and I am close by. After the final ward round the following day you can usually leave the clinic.
Advantages, disadvantages and risks
The advantage is obvious: the contour of the neck is considerably better defined again. Sport and weight loss can influence the neck contour positively, but the internal gathering of the SMAS is the key to a good result. After the procedure small bruises and areas of hardening from the internal gathering often occur; these loosen with self-massage within 4 to 6 months. As with every operation, infections and wound healing problems are possible.

- A special bandage supports the surgical result: permanently for 2 weeks, then for a further 4 weeks at night.
