Facelift – What’s Behind the Procedure?
The facelift is one of the most well-known procedures in plastic surgery and refers to the surgical tightening of the face.
In recent decades, techniques have become significantly more refined and, with an improved understanding of facial anatomy, much more minimally invasive.
A facelift repositions sagging soft tissues, smoothing the cheek, neck, and sometimes forehead areas.
Fine wrinkles around the mouth and eyes can be treated with nano-fat transfer or medical needling.
What can I expect from a facelift?
Many patients fear a facelift because of overdone results seen in the media.
Our goal is a rejuvenation of about 5–10 years, giving a fresher appearance without looking “operated”.
How is a facelift performed?
The incisions are made in front of and partially behind the ear.
If combined with a forehead lift, the incision extends into the hairline.
The SMAS layer (submuscular aponeurotic system) is tightened to achieve a durable result.
Typically, a facelift can reverse aging signs by 5–10 years, and may be repeated if tissues sag again later.
We carefully maintain natural facial expressions and contours to avoid an artificial look.
At what age is a facelift recommended?
Most patients are over 50 years old, but depending on genetics, weight loss, or medication history (e.g., corticosteroids), it can be beneficial earlier.
Can marionette lines be treated with hyaluronic acid?
Unfortunately, marionette lines are difficult to correct with fillers alone, as they may distort facial proportions.
A facelift provides better results by lifting sagging tissue back into its natural position.
What does a facelift cost?
Costs depend on the extent of the procedure – whether it’s a midface lift only, or combined with neck tightening and fat removal.
Smaller variants start at around €5,000, with larger combined procedures costing more.
What type of anesthesia is used?
Minor lifts can be done under local anesthesia with sedation.
Extensive facelifts are performed under general anesthesia.
We provide an individualized treatment plan for each patient.
Facelift aftercare
Patients should avoid sports for 2 weeks.
Sutures are removed after 14 days.
A custom-fitted compression garment is worn for 1 week full-time, then 3 more weeks at night.
We recommend elevating the upper body during sleep in the first week.
Most patients are socially presentable after about 1 week.

How does the procedure work at our clinic?
During the **consultation and planning**, we discuss your wishes, perform an examination, and plan the operation precisely. On the day of surgery, we schedule your arrival to **avoid waiting times**. Before the operation, I review everything again and perform the markings. Our **nursing and anesthesia team** will take care of you throughout. Large lifts are performed **inpatient**, while mini-lifts can be done **outpatient**. A nurse will look after you overnight, and I personally remain available nearby. After the **follow-up examination the next day**, you can usually go home.Advantages, disadvantages, and risks
A facelift offers **visible rejuvenation** of facial contours that cannot be achieved non-surgically. Alternatives include **fillers or laser treatments**, though these have limited effect with advanced aging. Minor **bruising and firmness** may occur but usually resolve within six months.Aftercare and recovery
A **supportive bandage** helps stabilize results and should be worn for **6 weeks**. From day 14, **gentle self-massage** can help soften internal tissue. During follow-up, we remove sutures and review healing progress.Treatment facts
